Echo Findings In Pulmonary Embolism

The findings indicative of PE are

  • Dilated right heart
  • McConnell’s sign (1) - akinesia of the mid-right ventricular free wall, with normal motion of the apex (more specific than sensitive)
  • Paradoxical septal motion
  • Elevated pulmonary artery systolic pressure
  • Dilated IVC
  • A thrombus may be present in the right atrium (especially if the source is from a peripheral DVT)

The ESC does not recommend using echocardiography in hemodynamically stable PE, due to its low sensitivity.(2)
